My benchmark bird was a person. I was working for the Seattle Open Space
Program and very interested in preserving greenspace. Some activists from
Save Lake Sammamish and others organized a tour to Portland. We were at a
river and I was looking at the scenery. Mike Houck from Portland came along
and skillfully whistled to the birds and the whole landscape came alive in a
way I had never experienced before. It opened a whole new dimension for me.
I am now hoping to open that dimension a bit for other people....It really
did change my life.
