Hi Tweeters,
Among a number of other birds my field trip group and I saw on march
16th and 17th were hundreds of Sandhill Cranes. On the afternoon of the
16th we saw large movements of cranes as we drove east along Hwy. 26 between
Royal City and Othello. There were cranes in the air in every direction,
and two large concentrations in fields of corn stubble. One such field was
on the north side of 14SW, west of its intersection with A .7 Rd. Another
concentration was about a mile or two west of the County Line Ponds, in a
corn field right along Hwy. 26. From this spot we could see many hundreds
of cranes in flight over the Lower Crab Creek drainage. On the 17th and
further north (west of the Coulee Lakes), we saw in flight a flock of 6
Sandhills of two distinctly different forms, with two of the cranes about
25% larger than the other four.
