Michelle really started an interesting thread with her "benchmark" bird
designation.

Years ago I worked at the Great Salt Lake near the Bear River Migratory Bird
Refuge. Each day I would see lots of great birds on my way to work and
thought I was quite the expert because I knew the Great Blue Herons, Snowy
Egrets and Red-Winged Blackbirds. One day while riding to town for lunch
with some visitors, one man asked what that interesting red-headed bird was.
I had often wondered myself, so I went home and dug out the little-used
bird book and found it was the American Avocet. Next day I reported this,
and this man was impressed that I had looked it up. To make a long story
short, several years later we married! Both of us later agreed the
conversation about the Avocet had started it. I am a widow now, but the
Avocet will always be my favorite bird.
