More on Latin names:

Although not specifically for bird names, some tweetsters may also be
interested in these books (from an e-mail posted to the Ecology

Subject: results of request for Latin roots book

Thanks to everyone who replied (and lots did!). Because a number of
people expressed interest in the Latin roots book, I thought I'd post
the information to the list

The winner by far (in terms of numbers of suggestions) was..

Borror, Donald J. 1960. Dictionary of Word Roots and Combining Forms
Complied From the Greek, Latin, and Other Languages, With Special
Reference to Biological Terms and Scientific Names. Mayfield
Publishing Company, Palo Alto CA.

Other popular suggestions were...

Jaeger, Edmund C. 1962. A source-book of biological names and terms.
Charles C. Thomas, Publisher, Springfield, Illinois.

Donald M. Ayers. Bioscientific Terminology: Words from Latin and
Greek Stems, University of Arizona Press, Tucson, Arizona. 1972. ISBN
0-8165-0305-2

Both Borror and Jaeger (and maybe Ayers) are available from amazon.com

Thanks again.
Mary Beth
