Hi folks,

Kelly Bettinger, a not-too-long-ago Tweeter now in Corvallis, asked
if I could post this information on the Partners in Flight training sessions.
This looks like a great opportunity for those who want to do some
"birding with a purpose"!

Please reply to Kelly or to Barb Kott (addresses below).

The annual preseason bird identification and monitoring primer for
Neotropical Migratory birds will once again be presented at two locations.
The sessions are provided by the OR/WA chapter of Partners-In-Flight (PIF),
BLM, USDA-FS, and USFWS Neotropical Bird Programs.

This will be the seventh year of the Regional Point Count Monitoring
Protocol Work Sessions. The sessions are organized to teach bird
identification by sight and sound; review the regional point count
monitoring protocol established in 1994 and revised beginning with the year
2000; practice point count monitoring techniques; characterize bird habitat
relations and bird communities; review and distribute the vegetation
protocol for point counts and related survey methods; present and
distribute disks of the data entry program, Flight Attendant 4; discuss
analysis/techniques of bird point count data: and introduce other bird
monitoring techniques, nest search and (new in 2000 Raptor Monitoring and
Birds in Recreation Landscapes protocols) The material covered in the
sessions is essential to those who will be doing field monitoring and
indispensable to those who are managing bird monitoring programs or will be
doing point counts in the future.

The sessions are open to both non-government and government people
interested in bird monitoring. Each session has limited space and is on a
first-reservation basis. If you have attended a session in prior years,
note that repeat attendance is encouraged; you can never learn enough about
bird songs/calls and maintaining consistency in the protocol!!

If you plan to attend either session, please send your completed
registration form to Barb Kott as soon as possible. The sessions are
expected to fill quickly, so register early. Once registered you must
cancel before April 15, or the payment for room and board will be
nonrefundable because of contractual obligations to the host facilities.

Please distribute this announcement to people inside and outside the
goverment that may be interested and have them contact Barb directly for
further information. Messages can be left for Barb on a message machine,
FAX, or via computer at 503-622-3191 x687, 503-622-5622, bkott/r6pnw,mthood
or bkott/r6pnw_mthood at fs.fed.us respectively.

Please return the enclosed registration form and check made out to the
appropriate facility to confirm your attendance.

Note: FS and BLM participants will be paid on one large agency purchase
order, you do not have to enclose a check, however, you must fill out and
return the registration form to be registered.
