I had hoped more flocks of turkey vultures might have been noticed, but
it's hard for those guys to compete with pretty, brightly-colored species,
and even harder for birders looking in bushes to look up for flocks of big
birds. However, there were many great reports, all of which are much
appreciated.
Turkey vulture report for April 2000 from British Columbia, Oregon, and
Washington:
01 -- 1 in Thorp; 2 at Ellensburg; 5 soaring over the cliffs at Deception
Pass; 2 southeast of Randle; 1 40km north of Campbell River, B.C.
02 -- 1 thermalling over Astoria; 4 at Bellevue; 3 at the Electric City
roost; 1 over Bainbridge Island; 2 near Randle; 3 over Sumner
03 -- 1 at the Skagit Wildlife Refuge; 1 over the Samish Flats; 7 kettling
over Chuckanut Mountain; 4 at Fort Worden
04 -- 4 over San Juan Island; 2 over the Samish River; 1 near Ruby Creek, B.C.
05 -- 1 at LaCenter
06 -- 1 west of Rochester; 1 in the Graham-Eatonville area
07 -- 1 at Nisqually NWR; 1 over Silverdale; 1 at Floods, B.C.; 2 over
Jones Island; 2 at Lopez Island; 1 over Orcas Island
08 -- 1 over Thayler Wetlands near Belfair; 6 over Fort Worden beach; 6 NNW
of Granite Falls; 3 over Pearrygin Lake SP; 5 at West Salem, Oregon
09 -- 1 over the Vancouver airport (bad route!); 7 at Dungeness County
Park; 2 at Coulee City; 25-30 thermalling west of Dungeness Spit; 5 at West
Salem, Oregon
10 -- 1 south of Rochester; 4 now at the Electric City roost
13 -- 1 at Sumner; 5 at Cashmere
14 -- 2 at Chehalis; 2 at Ridgefield NWR; 3 over Ellensburg
16 -- 6 at Cascade Locks, Oregon; 6 east of Hood River, Oregon
17 -- 1 over Departure Bay, Nanaimo, B.C.; 2 near Sedro Woolley; 1 over
Littlerock
18 -- 1 at Cle Elum
21 -- 13 over Sechelt, B.C.
22 -- 1 at Black Lake Meadows; 3 at Maryhill SP; 2 on dead deer west of
Goldendale
