Sunny day with little or no wind. Drove about 130 miles of backroads
through the Rattlesnake and HorseHeaven Hills of western Benton
county with stops along the Columbia River at Paterson, Crow Butte
and the Whitcomb Unit of Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge.
A pair of Osprey tried unsuccessfully to fertilize eggs while
balancing on a power pole overlooking Whitcomb Slough.
On the Columbia there were 4 pairs of Canada Geese each towing a line
of young (3-4 weeks old?) ranging from 2 to 14 young per pair.
At Paterson a pair of Northern Harriers made a couple of passes
overhead with the male carrying a rodent, first in both claws, then
in one. On the last pass the female quickly appoached the male from
behind and below, grabbed the animal, and flew off with carring it
first one claw, then both. After about 100 yards she landed and
proceeded to eat. He landed about 100 yards away and proceeded to
watch.
