Mike, Gene, and Cascadia Birders,

There was a fourth report of Costa's Hummingbird this spring. It
was seen for a couple of days around April 10th near Chilliwack, about
60 miles east of Vancouver, B.C. This was during the period when there
was a gap in posting transcripts of the Vancouver RBA. I am not sure
how well this bird was documented, but I will try to find out.
There is an established pattern of Costa's Hummingbird showing up
in southwestern B.C. between late April and early June. The first B.C.
record was one at Cadboro Bay, near Victoria, from April 14 to 17,
1972. Campbell et al. (The Birds of British Columbia, Vol. 2) list 5
acceptable record for B.C. Of these, all are between April 14 and
June 1, except for one on July 3, 1984 at Nanaimo. All are from the
south coast except for one in the southern interior at Lillooet in May
1987. There have been a few more sightings in B.C. since then, but I
don't have all the details handy.
The B.C. records, plus recent records in Washington and Oregon,
suggest that a few Costa's Hummingbirds may stray to the Northwest
coast every spring, or almost every spring.
