Not really on the same subject but your statement about the nuthatch
answering you led me to relate what happened just yesterday morning. We
purchased a "Light and Sound" type sunrise alarm lamp. One of the sounds
that we got to choose from was birds. Since we wake up most mornings to the
birds calling outside our window I thought that choice would be appropriate.
We had our window open and this is what happened.

The alarm went off (starting at 4:30) and the "Birds" started to call. From
outside we could hear our neighborhood birds answering. As the sound from
the lamp increased so did the bird calls from outside. We had a wonderful
chorus going from both inside and outside our house.

The most interesting thing was that when we turned the lamp off all the
neighborhood birds quieted down and went about their morning business.

Red breasted Nuthatch. I used to hold my nose and say "deet" and the
Nuthatches would answer.
