Columbia Estuary Report - 05/07/2000

It's been a week thick with new arrivals.

The CASSIN'S VIREO singing outside my classroom window on
5/3 stopped the discussion on calculating heats of reaction.

A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was seen at Wireless Rd on 5/4.
A check of the feeder nearby on 5/5 produced a MOURNING
DOVE. BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK was reported by the owner there
on 5/2.

Saturday morning on Coxcomb Hill (home of the Astor Column)
proved to be flycatcher city with 2 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS,
2 WESTERN WOOD PEWEES (chasing each other and first noticed
from bill snappings) and a singing PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER.
The first detection of SWAINSON'S THRUSH here, as well.

BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK and PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER were also
among the migrants at the bike path near Battery Russell.
YELLOW WARBLERS and MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER were heard there
and at the Astoria Airport.

Shorebird numbers were lower than anticipated this week.
Wireless Rd has had up to 101 WHIMBREL in the cow pastures.
Good numbers of SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, SANDERLINGS and
DUNLIN continue to be seen at the Necannicum Estuary and
Parking Lot D, Ft. Stevens, but volume is much lower than
in past years.
