This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, May 5 (2000). This hotline,
sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday evening.
I'm going to start at Mann Lake, east of Lewiston Orchards, Nez Perce Co,
Idaho. On Apr 30 Bryan Jamison reported a SANDERLING, a LEAST SANDPIPER, 12
AMERICAN AVOCETS, and a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE. On May 1 Keith Carlson added 3
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 13 BLACK-NECKED STILTS, only 1 AMERICAN AVOCET, a
MARBLED GODWIT, a BONAPARTE'S GULL, the SANDERLING and the sandpiper. On May
2 Dick Johnson scoped 5 ROSS'S GEESE and 3 SNOW GEESE. Also a WESTERN
SANDPIPER. On May 4 Deb Beutler added the best birds of the week, 2
WHITE-FACED IBIS, a rare northern Idaho report. She also viewed a possible
WESTERN GULL and a FORESTER'S TERN. Most everyone had the LESSER YELLOWLEGS.
Wow. Not a bad week. Mann Lake is about 3 miles east of the Lewiston
Orchards along Powers Avenue. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was near Colville, Stevens Co, WA through at least
May 3, according to Warren Current. From US 395 about 3 miles NW of
Colville, take Valley Westside, Gold Creek Road SW (that's a left turn
coming from Colville) and continue 200 yards. Turn right on Bastian Lane.
Warren's house is the second on the left, gray with a red roof, on a long
drive. WA DeLorme 188, D-1.
The first LEWIS'S WOODPECKER spring sighting since 1987 in Two Rivers Co
Park, Benton Co, WA was reported by Dennis Rockwell on May 3. The park is at
the east end of Kennewick on the south side of the Columbia River near the
confluence with the Snake River. WA DeLorme 39, C-8.
In northwestern Whitman Co WA on Apr 29 were 2 good birds according to Diane
and Tom Weber, Harold Ward, and Mary Bostick. A FERRUGINOUS HAWK was at the
intersection of Lancaster and Little Cove roads. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER
was at the south end of Rock Lake, about 2 miles north of Ewan off WA 23. WA
DeLorme 72, CD-2.
At Phillio Lake about 3 miles SW of Spangle, Spokane Co, WA on May 3, Warren
Hall saw 1 ROSS'S GOOSE, 25 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, a CASPIAN TERN, 2
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, and numerous LEAST SANDPIPERS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and
WILSON'S PHALAROPES. From US 195 at Spangle, head west on Jennings Road and
then turn left on Phillio Lake Road. It's about 3 miles to the lake from US
195. WA DeLorme 73, A-5.
A single GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW passed through Warren Hall's Spokane WA yard
this past week.
If you have questions, please call before 9 pm, 208.883.0943.
