Hi folks,

Got the following message about a Biological Technician job with the
Olympic National Forest in NW Washington State. The Olympic has
been working with the Partners In Flight folks for many years, now, and
this is an excellent opportunity to put your birding skills to work for a
couple of months.

Please contact Dr. Marable at the addresses/phone listed below.

Birder's Alert!

Student Employment Opportunity
The Olympic National Forest

Position: Here's a great opportunity to apply those birding skills
learned in ornithology classes. The Olympic National Forest is seeking to
hire a biological technician to assist the Hood Canal District wildlife
biologist in forest bird inventories on the Olympic Peninsula. The duty
station is located at the Hood Canal District office located on Highway
101, approximately 30 minutes south of Port Townsend, Washington.

Work Period: Ideally, the work period would run from late-May through
mid-July, but these dates are somewhat flexible

Skills Needed: It is very important that the individual have strong
birding, (that is can identify Pacific Northwest forest birds by sound and
sight) organizational, and interpersonal skills. The person must be able
to work independently with very little direct supervision. Many survey
sites are in remote locations; as a result, the individual must be able to
operate a 4X4 vehicle with standard transmission. In addition, a knowledge
and understanding of cross-country navigation using a map and compass over
extremely steep and challenging terrain is required. Familiarity with
mountain bike use is also recommended. Physical fitness is a must! Good
computer skills are necessary, including knowledge of PC databases, such as
Microsoft Access.

Because of the rural location of the work sites, personal transportation
(car) is strongly recommended.

Finances: The position is targeted for a GS-5 404 biological technician
and the selection will be made either through the temporary employment or
student requisition programs. The latter program permits the rapid hiring
of students that meet the qualifications. However, the student must be
returning to an accredited school in the fall of 2000 to qualify.

Contact: Feel free to send me a copy of your resume (FAX 360.765.2202) or
contact me at the address below. Thanks and good luck!
