Subject: Spring 2000 Klickitat County North American Migration Count

Folks,

Thanks to some very talented birders, for the fourth consecutive year we
increased the number of bird species observed on one day in Klickitat
County, to 171, with 3 additional species (White-throated Swifts, Hutton's
and Red-eyed Vireos) seen the day before and/or after. The weather
Saturday, May 13th was ideal...windless, rainless, and cool due to high
overcast clouds, and following several days of stormy weather. The birding
was "hot" all day.

Species seen for the first time on a Spring Count included Clark's Grebe,
Black-necked Stilt, American Avocet, Wilson's Phalarope, Swainson's Hawk,
Olive-sided Flycatcher, Green Heron, Bonapartes Gull, Thayer's Gull, Common
Loon, and Common Poorwill.

We missed 12 species we could reasonably expect to see, so the potential
for going over 185 is possible with luck and a little more effort. Think
seriously about joining us for the Fall count, September 16th, and next
May's Spring Count (the second Saturday).

Final results will be posted at
http://www.teleport.com/~bhansen/birding_klickitat_county.htm by June 1st.

Thank you to all who helped.
