Thanks(!) to so many of you who replied to my Klamath, Oregon Yellow Rail
query posted a week or so ago. I haven't had a chance to say thanks
individually, but perhaps as a way of saying thanks, I'll share my latest
weekly Piedras Blancas summary here forwarded below. These birding summaries
have been posted to the San Luis Obispo County (California) birding listserv
weekly since I arrived here, my 7th consecutive spring season to monitor the
gray whale cow/calf migration.

BTW, this season marks an all time record low count for calf production. We
think it's probably due to heavy ice years (1998 and 1999) on the primary
feeding grounds in the Bering and Chuckchi (Alaska), and there just simply
was no calf production rather than anything more sinister. We should know
better in another year or two as the ice conditions are currently back to
normal this year.

I should be on the road and heading for southern and SE Oregon by the end of
the week and look forward to popping in for a look around and hopefully hear
a few Yellow Rails. Thanks again! --Richard Rowlett
