I think sunflower seed is the seed of choice for band-tailed pigeons. I
have a flock here in Bothell of anywhere from 3-4 to 24 birds, depending on
the time of year. They can, indeed, clean out the large tray feeder in a
short time. I mix in about a third of cracked corn with the sunflower and
assume they inhale a little of that, too. Most of Bothell is primarily
evergreen trees - lots of them - with big-leaf maples thrown in here and
there. That is probably why there is a healthy local population.
