My fair-weather birding companions apparently feared they would melt in the
rain, so I made my journey solo this morning. Their loss. Despite starting
with two hours of rain, the birding was great:

Green Heron One flying up the slough
Wood Duck 1 Ad. male, 1 Ad. female, 10 chicks in slough
Spotted Sandpiper 1 at lake
American Kestrel PAIR, apparently trying to nest
BLACK SWIFT 50-100 over boardwalk
Red-eyed Vireo Heard - first of spring
Warbling Vireo Several heard
Townsend's Warbler One at east end of boardwalk
Wilson's Warbler 2 or 3 heard
Western Tanager One male
LAZULI BUNTING One male E. of velodrome restroom

The WOOD DUCK momma and babies are probably the same ones seen at the Rowing
Club pond last week. Today they were in the slough pretty near the lake.

The AMERICAN KESTREL pair seem to be attempting to nest in the large snag
cottonwood between the east end of the Pea Patch and the grass soccer fields.
They were being heavily mobbed by crows.

All the usual breeding birds were in abundance, including Swainson's Thrush,
Willow Flycatcher, Western Wood-Pewee, Black-headed Grosbeak, Yellow Warbler,
Rufous Hummingbird, Savannah Sparrow, 4 species of swallow, Cedar Waxwing, and
Common Yellowthroat.

I thought I saw a Common Merganser female land in a tree ???

All told, about 52 species in 4 1/2 hours.
