This is the VANCOUVER BIRD ALERT for Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000.

RARE BIRD ALERT for SWAINSON'S HAWK. Other feature birds are
BAR-TAILED GODWIT and TUFTED DUCK.

First, many thanks to Calvin Gehlen for his fine work on the Bird Alert
during October.

Next, birders are reminded that Thursday, Nov. 2 is Birders' Night, at
7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of York House School, 4176 Alexandra Street,
near the SW corner of Granville St. and W King Edward Ave. The speaker will
be Tony Webb, an aeronautical engineer, speaking about flight and birds.

Sightings for Wed. Nov. 1:

An adult light morph SWAINSON'S HAWK was seen soaring over the UBC
Botanical Garden at 1:30 p.m.

The BAR-TAILED GODWIT was relocated at the base of the Coalport jetty,
south side, along with a MARBLED GODWIT and many BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS.

The WILLET is still at the base of the Tsawwassen ferry jetty, south
side.

The female TUFTED DUCK and an EARED GREBE were again on the Iona Island
Outer Pond, and the male CINNAMON TEAL was on the marsh pond to the north.

On Sea Island, a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was with CANADA GEESE
behind the horse farm.
