Just before noon today, Ron Hall stopped by and while we were outside
talking, Sandy comes out and says "come in the house quick!"
As we got to the living room we could see a very large mature NORTHERN
GOSHAWK sitting on a perch not more then 15 feet from the window.
Beautiful bird. After getting some photos the bird flew away and Ron
and I went out to my shop. A few minutes later Sandy comes out again
and says " you better come back in the house again." To our
astonishment a immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK had a male CALIFORNIA QUAIL
pinned to the ground about 8 feet from the house. The male CALIFORNIA
QUAIL was slightly tangled in some netting that was covering the grape
vines so the deer wouldn't eat all the grapes. The imm. NORTHERN
GOSHAWK gave a few jerks and pulled the quail loose. It stood there
for a few seconds and then flew down over the hill with it's lunch.

I got several photos.

I just looked out the window and the light-morph HARLAN'S REDTAIL HAWK
is perched on the top of a fir tree below our house. What a day!!

I need to add one point. We are quite sure the bird that took the
quail was a imm. NORTHERN GOSHAWK, but it seemed on the small side,
more the size of a large imm. COOPER'S HAWK. Everything was happening
so fast and I was locked into getting photos that it was not until
afterward that we questioned the species. The photos will tell. I did
not think a COOPER'S HAWK would take a CALIFORNIA QUAIL. Photos in a
few days.
