The albino Yellow-billed Loon that was first sighted by Joe TerLouw and Zoe
and Bill Shumway on 11/16/00 along Ruston Way was not to be see between 8
and 8:30 a.m. on 11/18/00. But when I went back at 3:30 p.m. on 11/18/00,
it was readily visible with a scope just to the east of the end of the
Asarco mess and west of all the businesses along Ruston Way. It was far
enough out, at first, that I first spotted it with my binos but had to
confirm ID with my scope. After about 15 minutes it dove and came in much
closer to where it could be observed easily with binos. During the half
hour that I watched it, it spent most of the time preening and loafing
along. Apparently, it dove and changed location due to two men in a fishing
boat. This is an extra, extra special bird for me because it is a Lifer;
now I just have to find one in normal plumage.
