With the clear weather and overnight temperatures well below freezing
recently, Ive noticed the winter wrens once again congregating in
communal roosts. Once I watched six of them enter a natural cavity
late in the day, but mostly Ive observed them using the swallow
nestboxes under the eaves of my house. I sometimes sit and watch them
come and go as twilight progresses, keeping a count of how many are
inside the box at any one time, until it is too dark to see. High
count to date has been at least fourteen winter wrens in one nestbox.
