Living, as we do in a land where there are 200+ rain days
per year. It's good to have a plan for inclement days.
I've been doing what I call rain routes since my early
days back in the 70's when my dad and I would take drives
around Cottage Grove or Dorena Lake. A rain route always
uses the same roads. My routes take me to places where
I can (if necessary) scope from the car, pish up sparrows
from the car, count shorebirds from the car.

I have two regular Columbia Estuary rain routes, one on
each side of the river. I ran the Oregon side rain route
today which included: lower Youngs Bay, Wireless Rd, Tucker
Creek, Ft Clatsop Rd., Astoria Airport, Cemetery Lake,
the road out to parking lot C and Hammond Boat Basin.
I managed 58 species without getting my head wet.
