This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Nov 24 (2000).

A NORTHERN HAWK-OWL is residing about 9 miles south of Colville, Stevens
Co, WA. Ken Knittle found the bird Sun Nov 12. The last report to me was on
the Mon Nov 20. Anybody seen it since? The bird is along US 395 about 9
miles south of Colville in the vicinity of milepost 219. It has been seen
on the west side of the hwy above the green and yellow waste management
sign, 100 yards down the road toward the waste management plant. It's also
been seen along the Old State Hwy, which lies east of the current 395. You
can get there by heading south from milepost 219 and turning left on 12
Mile Road and taking it to Old State Hwy. Head back north checking tree
tops. Also check along Slide Creek. A MERLIN was also reported in the
general area. WA DeLorme 104, A-1.5, T34N, R39E, Sections 26 and 35.

An AMERICAN BLACK DUCK was reported at Mann Lake, Nez Perce Co, ID on Sun
Nov 19 by Joe Lipar. I did not find it yesterday, Nov 23, but the huge
flock of Mallards on the lake were all roosting on the ice making it nearly
impossible to find a lone black duck. Also at Mann Lake this past week were
3 DUNLIN and a good variety of waterfowl, including CANVASBACK, GADWALL,
COMMON LOON and another 9 or 10 species as well. Mann Lake is about 3 miles
east of the Lewiston Orchards along Powers Avenue. Also in Lewiston on the
Clearwater River next to the grain towers was a single female HARLEQUIN
DUCK according to Joe Lipar. A good viewing spot is from the eastern-most
parking lot along the US 12 bypass around downtown Lewiston. ID DeLorme 54,
A-1.

A GREEN HERON was on the Columbia River near Richland, Benton Co, WA on Nov
23 according to Brad Klein? Klemm?. The bird was just upstream from the
Richland Yacht Club.

A dozen CATTLE EGRETS were in Burbank, northwestern Walla Walla Co, WA on
Nov 14 according to Mike and MerryLynn Denny. The birds were along Basin
Loop Road. A single CATTLE EGRET was persisting at Pierces Greenvalley RV
Park 2.75 miles east of the jct of US 12 and US 730 along US 12. WA DeLorme
40, and CD-1.

Three AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were along Whelan Road, Whitman Co, WA near
Pullman on Nov 18 according to Tom and Diane Weber. WA DeLorme BC-8.

Some other interesting sightings included a MERLIN in Moscow, Latah Co, ID,
a GYRFALCON flying toward the Walla Walla, Walla Walla Co, WA city/county
airport, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in College Place near Walla Walla WA, MARSH
WRENS at the sewage treatment plant in Moscow and Pullman, Whitman Co WA,
COMMON REDPOLLS just north of Palouse Falls State Park, WA, a HERMIT THRUSH
at Rook's Park near Walla Walla, a BARN OWL just east of Moscow at the
Plant Science Farm, and a PRAIRIE FALCON 4 miles north of Genesee, Latah
Co, ID along Old Hwy 95.

If you have any questions about the birds on the hotline, give me a call.
208.883.0943.

Good birding.

Kas
