Tweeters,
The highlights of the penultimate Port Townsend Marine Science Center
Protection Island cruise of 2000 included sighting two (2) Black Brant (one
of my favorite birds) and a large (50+) flock of Common Goldeneye. Both
species were spotted at the spit extending from Indian Island to the east
into Kilisut Harbor. Additionally exciting was sighting four (4) marbled
murrelets on the wing in the vicinity of McCurdy Point (Middlepoint) as we
were returning from Protection Island.
The trip began with diminishing winds which were a non-factor as we rounded
Point Wilson, heading west towards the Island, in the lee of the Quimper
Peninsula. The marine weather forecast was, once again, a reliable
resource.
