hello scott,

when i was in san diego for a *very* brief time a year ago, i was
able to find costa's hummingbirds quite easily, or perhaps i should
say that *they* found *me* whenever i stood next to a large bush
with red flowers. to enhance the "bird finds human" effect, you
should wear a red hat and stand next to one of their flowering
bushes (these bushes are extraordinarily large hibiscus bushes
and are found everywhere, although i found them to be prevalent
in residential areas near the hotel where i was staying).

one thing to keep in mind is that i was in san diego in early
october, a little more than a year ago, so it is possible that
the costa's hummers are not quite as easy to see at this later
time of year.

regards,
