This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Sep 29 (2000). This hotline,
sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday evening.

According to Mike and MerryLynn Denny, at the Walla Walla River delta in
western Walla Walla Co WA on Sep 23 were 6 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and
numerous other shorebirds. Today, Sep 29 there were 8 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS,
2 SANDERLINGS, and a PEREGRINE FALCON. Just north of the delta at the ponds
near milepost 300 along US 12 were 470 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, a SNOW
GOOSE, and 4 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS. Further north at Hood Park on Sep 23
MerryLynn found a single BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER in the northeast corner of
the campground but the bird was not seen today. However, they found a FOX
SPARROW and a GOLDEN-CRONWED SPARROW at Hood Park today. The Walla Walla
delta is just north of the jct of US 12 and US 730 in western Walla Walla
Co. Use the pull-out opposite the entrance to Madame Doriane Park and follow
the trails to the delta. To get to Hood Park, follow US 12 north to where it
meets WA 124 for the entrance. The delta is on WA DeLorme 40, D-1 and Hood
Park, although not specified, is on WA DeLorme 39, C-8.

Nearby, at the Yakima River delta near Richland, Benton Co WA, the Denny's
had a SABINE'S GULL and a SANDERLING on Sep 23. WA DeLorme 39, C-6.

Among the expected shorebirds at Mann Lake, about 3 miles east of the
Lewiston Orchards, Nez Perce Co, ID on Sep 23 was a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 6
SANDERLINGS, and 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS according to Keith Carlson. Very
poor reservoir levels have really shrunk the mud. To get to Mann Lake from
the north end of Lewiston, follow US 12 West into town, cross the Clearwater
River and immediately take the first left toward East Lewiston. Turn left
again onto East Main Street and follow it about 0.5 mile to the blinking
yellow lights. Turn right onto Lapwai (aka Lindsay Creek) Road. When the
road forks stay right on Lindsay Creek. When Lindsay Creeks ends at Grelle
Avenue, turn left onto Grelle, and just after Grelle makes a sharp right
turn, turn left onto Powers Avenue. Follow Powers about 1 mile, straight
past the grain towers, to the reservoir. ID DeLorme 54, A-1 and A Birder's
Guide to Idaho p 88 (see the map on p 84).

At Salmo Mt and pass in Pend Oreille Co in extreme northeastern WA, Warren
Hall and Jim Acton report 4 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, 2 BOREAL CHICKADEES, 1
NORTHERN PYGMY OWL, PINE GROSBEAKS, and a single THREE-TOED WOODPECKER. The
road over the pass and to the mountain takes off from the east side of
Sullivan Lake east of Metaline Falls. WA DeLorme 119, B-6.

At Mica Bay on the west side of Lake Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co, ID was a
single COMMON TERN on Sep 28 according to Shirley Sturts. ID DeLorme 60 B-1.
