On Hayden Lake, just north of Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co, ID, Stephen
Lindsay and Shirley Sturts have observed Pacific Loon-like bird tentatively
ID'ed as an ARCTIC LOON **. Stephen found the bird Tues Oct 3. This bird is
lacking the chin strap and has prominent white flank patches. This is a
difficult ID challenge so I'd encourage folks to go look at the bird and
make comments. From I-90 in CdA, go north on US 95 toward Sandpoint. Pass
the Silver Lake Mall and Prairie Avenue. At the second right past Prairie
Avenue (US 95 milepost 434.3), turn east on Honeysuckle (Texaco on the
corner) and proceed through the light on Government Way. Honeysuckle stops
when it hits 4th Street and 4th becomes Honeysuckle tot he left. Take the
left toward Honeysuckle Beach. Just before the beach, turn right on South
Hayden Lake Drive and note your mileage. The loon has been seen at a spot
about 1 mile from Honeysuckle Avenue. There are 2 "Hope Reality" signs near
a turnout. Also check by Tobler Marina. This road has other turnouts, is
narrow, and busy, so be careful. Also stay out of the way of the locals. ID
DeLorme 60, AB-1.5 and A Birders Guide to Idaho p 43-45.

** transcribers note: Subsequent to this sighting only a positively
identified Pacific Loon (or loons) was seen at this location.

At Mann Lake, about 3 miles east of the Lewiston Orchards, Nez Perce Co, ID
this past week were some good birds. On Sat Sep 30, Charles Swift reports 3
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 2 SANDERLINGS. On Oct 1 Keith Carlson saw GREATER
WHITE FRONTED GEESE and 75 or so SNOW GEESE. Later that day Jane Westervelt
observed 6 SANDERLINGS, a single BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, and 2 SANDHILL
CRANES. On Oct 4 Bryan Jamison tallied a female SURF SCOTER. To get to Mann
Lake from the north end of Lewiston, follow US 12 West into town, cross the
Clearwater River and immediately take the first left toward East Lewiston.
Turn left again onto East Main Street and follow it about 0.5 mile to the
blinking yellow lights. Turn right onto Lapwai (aka Lindsay Creek) Road.
When the road forks stay right on Lindsay Creek. When Lindsay Creeks ends at
Grelle Avenue, turn left onto Grelle, and just after Grelle makes a sharp
right turn, turn left onto Powers Avenue. Follow Powers about 1 mile,
straight past the grain towers, to the reservoir. ID DeLorme 54, A-1 and A
Birder's Guide to Idaho p 88 (see the map on p 84).

An adult MEW GULL was with other gulls at Swallows Park south of Clarkston,
Asotin Co, WA on Sep 30 according to Charles Swift. The park is between WA
129 and the Snake River just south of Clarkston. WA DeLorme 43, A-8.

If you have any questions about the birds on the hotline, give me a call.

Good birding.
