Hi, All. Last year the hawk watchers at Chelan Ridge also saw a Hawk Owl.
Directions from the south: From Chelan follow alternate 97 north about 4
miles and turn left onto Apple Acres Rd. After about 5 additional miles,
turn left onto Antoine Creek Road. This begins paved, but in a few miles
becomes dirt, and then becomes Forest Service Rd. 8l40. The road continues
up through a series of switchbacks, ending at a T intersection. Turn right,
you will be on Forest Service Rd. 8020. Proceed about one mile. First
parking area is used by the banding crew; next lot, with portable toilets
will lead to hawk watch site. To get to where the Hawk Owl was first seen,
continue another 2.3 miles (wasn't that what the original message said),
where they hung a marker.
These first directions are for the best driving road. You can also get to
the Hawk Watch Site from the north by driving on Hwy. l53 (drive south from
Methow or north from Pateros.) Turn on Black Canyon Road (Forest Service
Rd. 40l0) which is 4.5 miles south of Methow and 6.5 miles north of Pateros.
Drive up winding dirt road for 9 miles. You will come to a T intersection;
turn left on Forest Service Rd. 8020 and drive 3.5 miles to hawk watch site,
or l.6 miles to where the owl was first seen.
This road is rougher to drive than the road from Chelan. Good luck!
