Yesterday, Meredith (Richard D. Spencer) gave directions to the Chelan Ridge
Hawk Owl site. These are good, but please use my directions as a
supplement. The key to getting your car up to Chelan Ridge without mishap
is staying on the main forest road from the town of Chelan. The other roads
are steep and rocky.

Carol's supplemental directions:
Do not stray from the main forest road and your car should be okay. The
ridge road across the top [Carol thinks this is probably 8020 referred to in
Meredith's post] is
rutted and dusty. It might be sorta bad in bad weather. But it's fairly
short and there were no rocks. Here are my directions.

Carol's Directions to Hawk Watch site:
At the junction of Highways 150 and Alternate 97 just northeast of Chelan,
set
your odometer. All mileages proceed from there. Take Alt 97 north. It
goes toward Pateros.
At 2.8 miles - left on Apple Acres Rd
7.5 miles - left on Antoine Creek Rd
11.2 mi. - Antoine Creek Road turns to dirt
13.1 mi.- right on FR 8140 (main Forest Rd.)
17.3 mi.- left at Y (stay LEFT on main FR) Road will go downhill a little
and traverse beneath the ridge a sizable distance. (Beware. This where I
went right instead of left and took a rock in the transmission pan furthur
up on
the ridge.)
23.4 mi. - go RIGHT at T near top of ridge [Carol thinks this is 8020].
Sign says Chelan 19 miles to
left. [That road is steep and rocky. Don't take it when you go back to
Chelan.] Sign says Cooper Mt. 1 mile to right. Go right and keep bearing
right on this ridge road past a series of spurs to the left.
24.7 mi. - Parking and check-in [when Hawk Watch is active-early Sept to mid
Oct]. If you continue about 1 blk.
furthur past the big parking area, there is a small parking area on the
left. In this lot, the trail starts up to Obs. It is 3/4 mile to the top.
Gains about 200 feet elev. Don't bother taking a scope. No room at the top
of Obs for it. Just take bins.
It took 1 hour to get to the top parking lot from the town of Chelan.
