The weather yesterday morning was much better than the forecast I heard had
predicted. It was overcast, and there was a bit of morning fog, especially
over the meadows, but there was no threat of rain or unsettled weather. Hugh
Jennings joined me for the first couple of hours, on what was a rather
interesting and successful day. Highlights included:

Green Heron Several
Bufflehead A dozen on lake
Common Snipe One in East Meadow
Virginia Rail Heard perhaps 10, ALL along the slough
American Coot 1000? More? On lake
Cedar Waxwing 5 at e. end of trail
Townsend's Warbler 1 at Rowing Club
Lincoln's Sparrow 1-2 in compost piles
Savannah Sparrow 2 in compost piles

No cormorant, no raptors except Red-tail, no shrike, no teal, no mergansers, no
meadowlark.

Had all the usual gulls - Glaucous-winged, Mew, Ring-billed, and California.
Gull numbers are still pretty low so far this fall. Duck numbers were VERY
low - about 10 Mallard, 2 N. Shoveler, 2 Am. Wigeon, 1 Ring-Necked Duck, 2
Gadwall, 12 Bufflehead. Pretty good species list for only 30 individual ducks.

All told, 50 species in 4 hours.


ALSO Tuesday 10/24 at Lake Sammamish State Park, I had a late sighting of a
BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER (female). My previous late date was October 4th,
with a 1998 sighting at Discovery Park.
