The Rare Bird Alert continues for BAR-TAILED GODWIT
A reminder to birders that this coming Thursday is Birder's Night at 7:30 PM
in the auditorium of York House School, 4176 Alexandra Street, which is near
the southwest corner of Granville Street and West King Edward Avenue. Guest
speaker will be Tony Webb, an aeronautical engineer speaking about flight
and birds.

Sightings for Saturday, October 28th

>From Iona come the following reports:
At the South Jetty were 3 PARASITIC JAEGERS, a SNOW BUNTING, a LAPLAND
LONGSPUR and a SHORT-EARED OWL.
Over the causeway was a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and at the outer pond was a TUFTED
DUCK.

At the south base of the Roberts Bank Jetty was the BAR-TAILED GODWIT, first
seen on October 22nd.

At Lighthouse Marine Park in Point Roberts were 12 HEERMAN'S GULLS.

A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was seen in Stanley Park as well as a PILEATED
WOODPECKER.

A BARRED OWL remains in downtown Vancouver.

Sightings for Friday, October 27th

7 TUNDRA SWANS were seen at the Iona outer pond and the BARRED OWL continues
to be seen downtown.

Sightings for Thursday, October 26th

In a report from Iona Island, there was 1 PARASITIC JAEGER seen
from the Jetty, a female TUFTED DUCK in the outer pond and a juvenile
PECTORAL SANDPIPER at the sewage ponds.

>From Colony Farm comes the report of 2 VIRGINIA RAILS and 2 ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS.

Downtown Vancouver, a BARRED OWL is frequenting the area near Burrard and
Dunsmuir as are a pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS.

Sightings for Wednesday, October 25th

At Boundary Bay, there were 15 TUNDRA SWAN near the mansion.

At the Grebe Islets in West Vancouver were 4 SURFBIRD and at nearby
Ambleside Park was a BLACK OYSTERCATCHER. Another BLACK OYSTERCATCHER was
seen at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty as well as a WILLET.

There was an OSPREY over Reeve Park, Coquitlam.

Sightings for Tuesday, October 24th

The BAR-TAILED GODWIT was seen for the third consecutive day at the Roberts
Bank Jetty on the rising tide and once again at high tide at Canoe Pass,
near the old cannery pilings, which is accessed along the dyke from the end
of River Road west in Ladner. A MARBLED GODWIT was also seen at Roberts
Bank.

Sightings for Monday, October 23rd

The BAR-TAILED GODWIT, first seen October 22nd was again seen at the outer
west end of the Roberts Bank Jetty on the rising tide and once again at high
tide at Canoe Pass, near the old cannery pilings.

In Point Roberts, 8 HEERMAN'S GULLS and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER were seen.

At the Iona outer pond were a TUFTED DUCK and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in
the blackberry bushes.

Sightings for Sunday, October 22nd

In late reports for October 21st, a female HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen at the
Iona outer pond. In the vicinity of the Maple Ridge Golf Course, a GREAT
GRAY OWL was seen being harassed by crows.

On October 22nd, a BAR-TAILED GODWIT was seen at low tide at the base of the
Roberts Bank Jetty. In the fields nearby and just off 34th Street were 4
SANDHILL CRANES, a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, a WESTERN GULL, a LAPLAND
LONGSPUR and a PEREGRINE FALCON.

>From the Iona Jetty comes reports of a SNOW BUNTING, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR and
2 PARASITIC JAEGER.

At Colony Farm, a ROUGH -LEGGED HAWK was seen and at Rocky Point Park in
Port Moody, there were 2 AMERICAN DIPPER at Noons Creek mouth.
