Ellen and I ran down to Ocean Shores yesterday, hoping for a chance at three
life birds for me (Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Yellow-billed loon, Bar-tailed
Godwit). We started with a few HORNED LARKS and many SAVANNAH SPARROWS
walking the Damon Point road on the way to the pond. We searched the Damon
Point pond for a couple of hours but saw only a small mixed flock of
PECTORAL and LEAST SANDPIPERS; we missed the Buff-breasted Sandpipers
although they had been seen by others earlier that day. We likewise dipped
on the Loon, apparently it is now moving around and has been seen over on
the Westport side of the bay. We had success at Tokeland however, three nice
BAR-TAILED GODWITS on the rock jetty at high tide, much paler than the
surrounding MARBLED GODWITS. We also had nice looks at WILLET and HEERMAN'S
GULLS at Tokeland before returning to Edmonds. The weather was wonderful, we
got to meet several other birders, and I got a "lifer". All-in-all a good
day in the field.
