On Monday at dusk I visited Totem Lake in Kirkland (Yeah - the actual lake.
Park in the Cowboy Restaurant lot). As the moon rose over the lake, perhaps
500 BARN SWALLOWS swirled in a tight cloud overhead. And around the lake,
perhaps 2-DOZEN VIRGINIA RAILS called. I took my eyes off the swallows, and in
the space of perhaps 2 minutes, they all disappeared, and the lake was left
quiet except for a few last rail calls and clicks.
