I give up on Broad-winged Hawks - today Hazel Bazemore Park in Corpus
Christie logged in 76,127 broadwings (plus 1,100 anhingas and a few other
odds and ends). Kettles of tens of thousands!!! Back to reality . . . and
turkey vultures.

Since I already have 13 pages of reports for the month, I thought I would
send out a mid-September report rather than have you wait until the end of
October for something <g>. Please continue to send reports to my e-mail and
I will collect them when I get home from Salt Creek.

Following are turkey vulture reports for British Columbia, Washington, and
Oregon for September 1-17, 2000:

01 -- 1 at Satsop; 1 at Nicomen, B.C.; 2 at Harrison Mills, B.C.
02 -- 7 over the beach at Lantzville, B.C.; 2 at Raymond; 3 east of
Tokeland; 1 at Tokeland; 4 at Bottle Beach; 2 at Hoquiam; 7 west of Burrows
Road, Hwy 109; 3 at Ocean Shores; 1 feeding on a Canada goose :-( in
northwest Victoria, B.C.
03 -- 1 over Shaw Island; ca.6 kettling over Orcas Island; 7 perched in a
tree at the Nisqually NWR; 1 over I-5 at Winlock; 4 soaring just east of
Sequim; 3 at Simpson Lake, Linn County, Oregon; 4 in Leland Valley, south
of Discovery Bay; 4 at Aberdeen; 12 sitting in green fields along SR 12
north of the Wynoochee River Bridge; 5 at Brady Loop Road; 2 at Satsop; 2
east of Bottle Beach; 1 at Harrison Mills, B.C.; 3 at Magellan Tunnels,
B.C.; 1 over Bridgeport
04 -- "several" adults over the Skagit River (seen from a kayak) plus 2
near the Hwy 9 bridge; 1 on the mud flats at the head of Minter Bay
05 -- 1 north of Swanson Lake in Lincoln County; 1 west of Port Angeles; 1
near Gold Bar; ca. 30 roosting at Maryhill SP (also seen on the 6th)
06 -- 2 over the Charles Pack Experimental Forest; 6 (all summer) on the
Quillayute Prairie near Forks
07 -- 5 soaring north of Sprague; 13 south of Omak; 3 at Hwy 97/17; 5+2 at
Chief Joseph Dam
08 -- 1 at Joyce; 3 at the Dosewallips River; 2 west of Cle Elum; 5
circling near the Roslyn exit on I-90; 25 over the Wenatchee River near Dryden
09 -- 25-30 feeding on Sockeye carcasses on the Harrison River/Hwy 7; 4 at
Centralia; 34 in a kettle at Rochester; 5 at Oakville; 7 at Malone; 3 at
Porter; 4 at Elma; 12 at Brady; 54 in a kettle at Satsop River; 7 at
Shouwelier Road wetland; 3 at Discovery Bay; 4 west of Shelton inspecting a
wood-cutting operation
10 -- 2 at the Tangen Sewage Ponds, Linn County, Oregon; 3 near Omak; 2
near Wenatchee; 1 soaring north of Stanwood; 3 over Joyce; 1 at Brady; 5 at
Viaduct Flats northwest of Victoria, B.C.; 5 circling north of Kittitas
11 -- 1 at Langley's Heritage Park, B.C.; 2 at Joyce; 8 circling a newly
chicken-manured field near Rainier; 1 roosting with a peregrine at the east
end of Rimrock Lake; 5 near Clear and Rimrock Lakes
12 -- 1 flapping away from Joyce; 3 soaring west of Freshwater Bay Road; 1
at the River-S Unit of Ridgefield NWR; 17+ looking for updrafts near Hwy
101 east of the Bruceport Historical Marker; 3 soaring up from the
Snoqualmie Valley; 3 over Chimacum; 2 near the Hamma Hamma River; 2 near
the Elma-Hicklin road; 2 riding the thermals east of Leavenworth
13 -- 6 over the Ocean Spray plant at Markham; 6 all summer near Dry Creek
Hill in Clallam County; one being chummy with an osprey over Richmond,
B.C.; 2 on the road (not dead) on Whidbey Island (it flew!); 10 roosting on
the Cassimer Bar north of Bridgeport
14 -- 3 over south Saanich, B.C.; ca. 5 feeding on a dead deer near
Shelton; 3 eating a dead animal in Sequim; 1 soaring over Maltby Lake
northwest of Victoria, B.C.
16 -- 40 (in groups of 5-7) over Big Andy Airstrip west of Port Angeles; 6
over Blewett Pass
17 -- 2 over Nisqually NWR, then 3 more - later five in a Douglas-fir near
the Visitors Center; 1 soaring east of Montesano; 8 west of Port Angeles

As always, these reports are very much appreciated and I thank everyone who
takes the time to send a sighting to me. I am very slowly putting the
information in a database which, down the road a ways, may provide a better
idea of turkey vulture distribution, migration, and a bit on behavior. Not
too much new, but interesting.
