It was one of those absolutely windless, heavy-air, mornings, with a hint of
fog, and a medium cloud cover. I felt fuzzy-brained, and I think the birds did
too, for they were very sluggish and quiet. Still, there were several birds to
see, and luckily I was not alone. It was a seven-sparrow day, with the first
FOX SPARROW of fall, and the same six others as last week, including at least a
half-dozen LINCOLN'S SPARROW and a couple of GOLDEN-CROWNEDS. Other
first-of-fall sighting were a couple of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, and a VARIED
THRUSH (heard only). Other notables:

American Bittern Flushed by a jogger seconds before we got to
the lake platform
Wood Duck Three, including a beautiful male
Swainson's Thrush Flock of five or six near the first footbridge
Brown Creeper At the first footbridge
Orange-crowned Warbler Two
Yellow-rumped Warbler Small flock of Audubon's race
Purple Finch A couple near the weir

While I found some CEDAR WAXWINGS at the rowing club, there were no flycatchers
and no vireos, only three warbler species, and just a handful of BARN SWALLOWS.
Sounds like summer is over, and winter is coming...
