I was out at the South Jety of the Columbia this afternoon to
check for a dragonfly movement to go along with the northeast
wind. I saw only 2 meadowhawks and a few more randomly moving
Aeshnas.

But there was a directed movement of CALIFORNIA TORTOISESHELLS
(_Nymphalis californica_) heading south at 1-3 per minute with
smaller numbers of Painted Ladies (_Vanessa cardui_) also in
evidence. This is (according to Dornfeld 1980) a fairly rare
event happening at about 10 year intervals.
