Subject: strange call on Tiger Mountain

I was out for a short hike with my wife yesterday on Tiger Mountain, and on
the south
side of the mountain we heard a strange call -- it was a loud, low-pitched,
monotonic,
almost metallic trill of five beats. At first I thought it might be some
sort of man-made
sound, but we were a long way from the nearest road, and the sound moved to
a second
location, making me believe the source had just flown. Of course it's
possible that I was
listening to two individuals.

I have no idea what this could have been. The closest thing in pitch and
volume that I
could compare it to is wild turkey, but it sounded unlike any turkey call
I've ever heard.

Any theories? I thought of Lewis' woodpecker, simply because I don't know
its call and
it seemed like a possibility. The one voice description I found was
inconclusive, but not
very satisfactory...
