I wouldn't try any "home remedies" for waterproofing binoculars. If it was
easy enough to do it at home, the manufacturer would have done it. You will
probably end up with a real mess.

There are several new binoculars that are waterproof and reasonably priced.
The Pentax DCF WP PC are supposed to be outstanding binos, waterproof,
phase-coated (a coating on the lenses that all of the top-priced binos have)
and sell for less than $500. The Swift Viceroy is waterproof but not
phase-coated and are very good. Birding Magazine has reviews of them in the
Oct 1999 and August 200 issues.
