This morning was one of those glorious fall mornings that make you not care
whether you see birds or not. Brian Bell and I started out a little before
sunrise, with the sky a brilliant turquoise color and a couple of clouds in
orangey-pink. There was low fog - the fog over the meadow was only about 5
feet high. The fog over the slough was a bit thicker. As the sun came up, we
had some marvelous sights of the sun streaming through the trees and fog,
including many great "fog-bows". Above the fog, dozens or hundreds of robins
couldn't keep still or quiet, chasing each other around the sunlit treetops.
After an hour the fog cleared, and we were left with a blue sky, yellow sun,
crystal clear morning.

There were a few birds too:

Green Heron One across from lake platform
Canada Goose Hundreds, w/one Aleutian race
Gr. Wh-fr. Goose Two with CAGO on grass soccer fields
Common Merg. Three flew downslough
Hooded Merg. Great male on Rowing Club pond
N. Harrier Imm. near lake, 2nd sighting over meadow
Accipiter sp. One hunting the compost piles
Virginia Rail One seen next to lake platform
Peregrine Falcon Imm. flew over meadow heading south
Barn Swallow A handful over the East Meadow
Swainson's Thrush At least 2 still around
Y-rumped Warbler Many, mostly Myrtle's race
Lincoln's Sparrow Many
Fox Sparrow At least 8-10

No flocks of obvious migrants. Only a few "summer" birds still around - 5 Barn
Swallow, 2 Swainson's Thrush, 3 Common Yellowthroat, 5 Savannah Sparrow, 5
Cedar Waxwing. Still, a great morning to be out, and about 45 species.
