This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Sep 22 (2000). This hotline,
sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday evening.

Among the expected shorebirds at Mann Lake, about 3 miles east of the
Lewiston Orchards, Nez Perce Co, ID this past week was a SABINE'S GULL, an
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, a few SANDERLINGS, a few
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and up to 3 COMMON TERNS according to Bryan Jamison
and Carole Vande Voorde. Very poor reservoir levels have really shrunk the
mud. However, every Saturday in September there will be a volunteer birder
leading tours of the reservoir and IDing shorebirds, beginning at 8 am near
the boat launch and continuing through the morning. If you come late, look
for the group. All are welcome. To get to Mann Lake from the north end of
Lewiston, follow US 12 West into town, cross the Clearwater River and
immediately take the first left toward East Lewiston. Turn left again onto
East Main Street and follow it about 0.5 mile to the blinking yellow lights.
Turn right onto Lapwai (aka Lindsay Creek) Road. When the road forks stay
right on Lindsay Creek. When Lindsay Creeks ends at Grelle Avenue, turn left
onto Grelle, and just after Grelle makes a sharp right turn, turn left onto
Powers Avenue. Follow Powers about 1 mile, straight past the grain towers,
to the reservoir. ID DeLorme 54, A-1 and A Birder's Guide to Idaho p 88 (see
the map on p 84).

A single GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW visited my feeder 5 miles south of Moscow, L
atah Co ID on Sep 21.

Although it now feels about right temperature wise, the ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
seen by Craig and Judy Corder south of Ritzville, Adams Co WA still seems
early.

If you have any questions about the birds on the hotline, give me a call.
208.883.0943.

Good birding.

Kas
