I conducted the monthly bird census at the Steigerwald Lake N.W.R., in
Clark County, on 9/27/00 and came up with the following 52 species. A
pretty respectable number for a refuge that is under a thousand acres in
size.
One of the Red-tailed Hawks was the darkest of these birds I have ever
seen. It was nearly completely black including the tail unlike in a
"Harlan's" Red-tailed Hawk, the throat to breast area had only a slight
mottling that showed where the "belly band' began.
