I just got the Sibley Guide in the mail...Ho Boy! It is, of course, now THE
field guide to North American birds. I'm supposed to be working now, so
this'll have to be short, but just to compare the number of illustrations
with the latest NGS guide, check this out.

Sibley NGS
Great Horned Owl 10 2
Green Violet-Ear 6 2
Green Kingfisher 8 2
La Sagra's Flycatcher 5 1
Greater Roadrunner 7 1
Black Scoter 12 5
Wood Stork 8 3
Merlin 23 9

The illustrations remind me a lot of the old Shell Guide to the Birds of
Britain and Ireland--but the illustrations are even larger, with most
plumages illustrated (of course). There are small thumbnails of every
species arranged by genus to illustrate giz. The flight shots of every
species will serve us all quite nicely--we may even be able to identify
warblers flying overhead at 300 feet like they do at Cape May. Very nice.
More later.

If you haven't ordered yours yet, I think mine (ordered online from Borders
Books) ran me $30 with postage--and got here in four days even though the
website indicated they were back ordered.

Birding just got a whole lot more fun! Thanks to St. Dave.
