FISH AND WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST 2
AT-SEA SEABIRD CREW LEADER

SALARY: $2807 per month (Range 48-Step A)

ANNOUNCEMENT DATES: Opens April 3, 2000 Closes 25 April, 2000

LOCATION: There is one 3.5-month temporary position with the Washington
Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Work will be based out of ports
(Ilwaco, Westport, Lapush, Neah Bay) on the outer coast of Washington.
Housing is provided during the week, but not on weekends.

START DATE: May 1, 2001 (anticipated) END DATE: August 15, 2001
(anticipated)

DUTIES: In the Wildlife Management Program, Science Division, under the
supervision of a Research Scientist. The project involves following a
detailed protocol for surveying for Marbled Murrelets, a federally-listed
threatened seabird, at sea using line transect methodology. Crew Leader
ensures correct lay out of survey tracklines. Reviews data collected to
ensure they are complete, error free, and consistent with above-mentioned
protocol and project design. Reports survey results to supervisor and
submits data on a regular basis. Responds to changes in survey schedule as
directed by supervisor. Ensures issued vehicles and equipment are
maintained and reports logistical needs to supervisor. Assists supervisor
with recruitment, selection, and training of crew.

REQUIREMENTS : A Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, natural resource
science, or environmental science AND 1 year of professional experience in
wildlife management or wildlife research, or habitat management or habitat
research. Twelve semester or 18 quarter hours of specific course work is
required for certain positions.
OR
A Master's degree in the applicable science may be substituted for the
required experience.

SPECIALIZED REQUIREMENTS: In addition to meeting the above requirements,
applicant must have:
-at least one season of seabird survey experience
-Supervisory or similar experience
-Normal (corrected) vision

Selected candidates will be required to provide results of a current-year
hearing test (Pure Tone Air Test) and a basic 20/20 eye exam for normal
corrected vision. The average cost for each test is about $30; WDFW will
reimburse selected candidates for the cost of these tests.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Applicants should be willing to:
-Comply with departmental policies, procedures, and State Merit System
Rules
-Accept direction and counseling from supervisors
-Direct and counsel survey crew personnel
-Report to work on time
-Work outside of assigned geographic work area upon short notice (per diem
provided)
-Accept responsibility for issued vehicles/equipment (radio, binoculars,
recorders, compass, etc.)
-Provide personal field gear (hiking boots, rain gear, back pack, etc.)
-Work weekends, scheduled days off, holidays, and rotating shifts
-Work long and/or extended hours; compensatory time given

learn and follow survey protocol, including operation of computer software
for entering data in real-time on a laptop while conducting surveys.
Observers must be able to accurately identify seabirds. Paperwork regarding
pay, housing, travel, etc., must be submitted in a timely fashion to the
crew leader. Must be willing and able to work harmoniously under cramped
physical circumstances and often under adverse physical conditions.

REQUIREMENTS : A Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, natural resource
science, or environmental science AND 1 year of professional experience in
wildlife management or wildlife research, or habitat management or habitat
