Greetings,

Today, April 8, I took a spin down to Grays Harbor County to have a look at the Tufted Duck and Ross's Goose reported yesterday by Patrick Sullivan.

The adult male Tufted Duck was at the northwest part of the Hoquiam Sewage ponds with both Greater and Lesser Scaup. The Tufted Duck was noticeably smaller than the male Greater Scaups and perhaps a little larger than the male Lesser Scaups.

Circling high overhead at these sewage ponds was a flock of 91 calling Sandhill Cranes. I believe this area is on a regular migration route for these birds rather than being a rarity here but I'm not positive. Conditions were very cloudy to the north.

The Ross's Goose was easy to find at the 35 milpost along SR 105.

At a wetland along the west side of the Brady Loop Rd were 3 Snow Geese and at least 7 Greater White-fronted Geese.

Good Birding,
David Beaudette
