I've been atop four or five hundred summits in WA and several elsewhere.
Don't recall seeing many birds above timberline, except for the
occasional raven or crow. I do recall ravens on Mount McKinley; miles and
miles from the nearest timberline.

The many, many books on Mount Everest often mention the voracious goraks
found far above timberline.

Staggered to the top of Mount Hood one afternoon; no one else around. Saw
a small something shivering in a hole in the snow; told my partner,
"Someone left a baby monkey up here!" Just then the critter climbed out
of the hole, spread wings, and took off on a long, steep glide into
eastern OR. We always had trouble getting folks to believe that until I
talked with a professional guide who had seen the same thing on a few
occasions. A flying squirrel? ?? How in the world did it get up there?
