This is the Vancouver Bird Alert for Sunday, April 8th - Evening Update

Sightings for Sunday, April 8th

At Deer Lake in Burnaby was a HERMIT THRUSH and near MacDonald Beach on Sea
Island were a NORTHERN SHRIKE and a EURASIAN WIGEON.

An unusual non-bird sighting were 2 California Sea Lions at Point Roberts,
which attracted a number of bird species including RHINOCEROS AUKLET and
BONAPARTES GULL.

Seen flying over UBC was a PEREGRINE FALCON and also in the area were 8
BAND-TAILED PIGEONS.

3 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen at Reifel Refuge. In the Ranch Park
area of Coquitlam, a surprise at one resident's feeder were 3 RED CROSSBILLS
along with 2 EVENING GROSBEAKS.

Further out in the valley were 3 TURKEY VULTURES, an OSPREY and an
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER near Sardis and 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS near the
Chilliwack exit on Highway 1.

Sightings for Saturday, April 7th

SANDHILL CRANES were seen in two locations today. 2 were seen in over flight
at 84th Avenue and 264th Street in Langley and 2 were seen near Highway 91
and 64th Avenue in Delta. Also in Delta, at Burns Drive and 96th Street was
a WESTERN GULL and a SHORT-EARED OWL was seen at 33A Avenue.

3 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen at Reifel Refuge, 4 BLACK
OYSTERCATCHERS were at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty as well as 2 more BLACK
OYSTERCATCHERS at the Point Roberts Marina. The AMERICAN KESTREL continues
to be seen at Templeton Road on Sea Island.

A successful survey of Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver had a
total of 57 species, with highlights being an OSPREY, a GREAT-HORNED OWL, 7
RING-NECKED DUCKS and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER.

At the Iona Outer Ponds were 3 VIRGINIA RAILS. At Cecil Green at UBC were
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS. Also visible from here is the large mass of scoters
which move along the water below the bluffs at UBC.

Sightings for Friday, April 6th

Two arrival CINNAMON TEALS were at the outer ponds at Iona today. Now is a
good time to visit Iona, where there have been 15 RING-NECKED DUCKS at the
outer ponds and a mass of thousands of SURF, WHITE-WINGED and BLACK SCOTERS
at the South Jetty Tip.

NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS are being seen at Iona as well as Deer Lake

Sightings for Thursday, April 5th

At the Iona Outer Ponds were 2 BARN SWALLOWS, 2 CLIFF SWALLOWS and 1
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW. Nearby, on the airport foreshore was a SNOWY OWL and
on Templeton Street on Sea Island was an AMERICAN KESTREL.

Near UBC on SW Marine Drive was a BARRED OWL.

Out of town in Harrison Hot Springs, there were 4 TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS and
an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.

Sightings for Wednesday, April 4th

Spring migrants are beginning to increase in number, with ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLERS being seen at Cecil Green at UBC, a SAVANNAH SPARROW at Deer Lake,
a BARN SWALLOW at Eagle Ridge Park, Coquitlam and an OSPREY in Port Moody.

The PALM WARBLER has been present for the past two days near Deering Island
at the end of Carrington Street in the Southlands area of Vancouver. The
bird was seen and heard singing at 8:30 this morning.

At Maplewood Conservation Area was a SPOTTED SANDPIPER. 2 RING-NECKED DUCKS
were at Colony Farm and at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty were 5 BLACK
OYSTERCATCHERS.
