I've spent the week working on a boat along the Seattle city waterfront, and was lucky to spot a merlin chasing pigeons along Myrtle Edwards Park near the P-I building. This was very close to where Kris Baker spotted one during the Seattle Christmas count. Rhino auklets, bald eagles, pigeon guillemots, western grebes, surf scoters were also present. No purple martins, not yet, for my spring sightings. Today would have been an excellent day for birdsurfing on the sailboard, with winds to about 25 knots!

My new image stabilizing binoculars made things much more pleasant, compensating for the boat movement and my shivering hands. I'm eager to try them in my sea kayak.
