This past friday my wife and I spent the day at the Julia Butler Hanson
Wildlife Refuge near Cathlamet. We drove the perimeter road, hiked the
Center road and canoed on the slough along Hunting Island. We saw 48
species of birds. Most notable for us was a White Tailed Kite along the
Center road. It flew in over a meadow, hovered briefly and dove for a kill.
It carried it's small rodent to the top of a spruce tree where we watched it
remove and discard the entrails and swallow the remainder whole. This area
was very exicting and well worth the side trip for anyone heading to Portand
or lands southward.
