Tonight I was checking some Port of Seattle public access areas along the west side of the Duwamish River, looking for purple martins. At T-105 I saw a tree swallow swoop into one nestbox at about 7:45pm, but little else. Upriver near Kellogg Island I could see one osprey hunkered down in the nest. I drove up to the next access, by the Greyline facility, and saw a flock of small shorebirds in the air, amidst a ruckus of canada geese and crows at the north end of the island. Suddenly a peregrine darted into my binocular view, and I followed it north to the tall red and white tower right near the osprey nest. It sat there in the middle of the tower on a railing for nearly 20 minutes, doing a bit of head bobbing and preening as the light got dim. About 8:20 it suddenly took off low and to the east, startling the osprey. The osprey flew to the south end of Kellogg Island and the peregrine disappeared over the river. Not a bad impromptu evening, and I didn't get locked behind a gate at sunset like I did at Nisqually on Sunday!
