Come one, come all! This May 12th, in honor of International Migratory
Bird Day, Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society is holding its annual Clallam
County Birdathon/Big Day. Last year 104 participants in 56 parties ran
around from La Push to Diamond Point to tally 25,098 individuals of 176
species. Our record, from 1999, was 193 species seen within 24 hours.
In the last 7 years this spring count has found 224 species in Clallam
County, so with lots of help we might challenge these numbers.

Not only is this a great opportunity for birders to discover the best
birding spots in Clallam County, but it also provides some exceptional
information about bird occurrences, migration, and distribution in our
county. You know -- amateur science! We try to cover all habitats in
the county, from the sub-alpine forests of the Olympic Mountains to the
salt marshes and mudflats of the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the offshore
continental shelf.

If you'd like to have an informal day of birding at spots you choose,
that is fine. If you'd like more direction, to help count a particular
area, we can provide some suggestions. I have tally sheets that I can
send to you, or if you just count on your own please keep track of
species, numbers, locations, miles, and hours, just like you do for
Christmas Counts.
