Cascadia Hummingbird Report - 4/25/2001

Rufous Hummingbirds turned up east of the Cascade Crest in several
reports this week. Most interesting was an apparent second-year
male that had not fully molted into a complete gorget. Theories
abound on where this bird came from still in this condition. A report
from Florence, MT was picked up off the Montana bird listserve.
I would like to hear from anyone with more information on this bird.

Ucluelet, BC 03-25-2001 84 48.9333 125.5500
Petersburg, AK 04-14-2001 104 57.0400 132.5600
Florence, MT 04-16-2001 106 46.6317 114.0781
Walla Walla, WA 04-18-2001 108 46.0644 118.3414
Camp Sherman, OR 04-21-2001 111 44.4606 121.6400
Mt. Baker, WA 04-22-2001 112 48.7775 121.8067

For those who are keeping track of CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD reports, the
individual reported last week from Spokane, WA was seen on 4-18 not
4-10 (I put wrote down the date for the previous year also included
to me in the report). There were many CALLIOPE sightings last week
including reports from Silverton, OR on 4-19, Camp Sherman and Camp
Polk near Sisters, OR on 4-21 and 4-24, Reardon, WA on 4-22 and from
Florence, MT on 4-16.

Reports from the southern Oregon coast describe a good show of
displaying and territoriality by ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRDS.

Word from the south coast is that the Manzanita (Arctostaphylos
columbiana) bloom has peaked. Pacific Madrone (Arbitus menziesii)
is now in bloom. I also received a report of Rufous Hummingbird
either nectaring or gleaning Salal (Gaultheria shallon). Here
on the north coast of Oregon, Rufous Hummingbirds continue to
hit the Twinberry (Lonicera involucrata) pretty hard. Twinberry
has a bright yellow, tubular flower with a well developed nectary
and is also popular with the small(ish) brown bumblebee that is
common here.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
